7 Tips for Efficient Pallet Management

Standardise. Stabilise. Save. Inefficient pallet packing is a hidden tax on your business, leading to rejected deliveries and costly breakages. We have handled thousands of shipments this year, and the same mistakes keep appearing. Follow these seven rules to protect your profit margins:

1

Choose the Right Pallet

Ensure you are using a standard UK (1200x1000mm) or Euro (1200x800mm) pallet that is structurally sound with no cracked boards.

2

No Overhang

Boxes should never hang over the edge of the pallet. Overhang reduces the vertical strength by up to 30% and makes stock vulnerable to impact.

3

Heaviest at the Base

Always place your heaviest items at the bottom to create a stable centre of gravity and prevent crushing lighter goods.

4

The Column Method

Wherever possible, stack boxes in columns rather than interlocking them. This provides the most structural strength for stacking in the warehouse.

5

Flat Top Surface

Keep the top of the pallet as level as possible. This allows for safe double stacking in the vehicle, which can cut your transport costs in half.

6

Tension is Key

When shrink-wrapping, ensure the wrap is tight and covers the base of the pallet itself. This "anchors" the load so it doesn't slide during transit.

7

Label All Four Sides

Don't make the driver search for paperwork. Place clear labels on all sides so the pallet can be identified no matter how it is loaded.
